NANPAKAL NERATHU MAYAKKAM- “AN UNDOUBTED MASTERPIECE”

Lijo Jose Pellishery never fails to impress the audience although he claims that he has no plans to impress. It seems that he succeeded in recreating his magical touch through "Nan Pakal Nerathu Mayakkam".

Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam is a 2023 Malayalam- Tamil bilingual film written and directed y Lijo Jose Pellishery starring Mammootty in the main role. The script is penned by S. Hareesh. it is jointly produced by Mammootty and Pellishery. The cinematography is done by Theni Eswar. Other prominent cast of the movie includes Ramya Suvi, Ramya Pandian and Ashokan.

The film revolves around James( Mammootty) who is on the return journey from Velamkanni(a pilgrimage center in Tamil Nadu) along with his family, relatives and some friends. When the bus stops in a rural village, James steps down from the bus and starts walking as if the place and route is quite familiar to him. He walks into a house and starts to act as if he is a member of that house. The repercussions form the rest of the plot.

It is imperative to mention the fabulous performance of the cast. Mammooty keeps on refining the acting genius in him. His effortless switching into James and Sundaram leaves the audience awestruck. He is the definition of passion towards one’s career. Other cast also does a commendable job in making the movie realistic. From the grandmother to the small children owns the frame.

Although the plot feels to be very light and simple at first sight it turns out to be complicated and difficult to unfold later. The detailing in this film is worth mentioning. The use of symbolism can be seen in too many occasions. For a drama film, this film doesn’t show the cliche type of drama. The climax is super exciting and leaves the audience confusing. Interestingly, whether the movie is open ended or not is also open to debate. The script writer has to be given due credit for that.

The role of music in setting the mood of the film can't go unnoticed. The whole film feels like a tribute to old Tamil movie songs and it blend perfectly with the plot. The sound designing and technical supremacy is quite commendable. Moving to the cinematography part the movie has very few moving shots and static shots form the major chunk of the film. They are quite instrumental in setting the mood of the film. Even the repetitive shots felt well placed.

As expected, direction of this movie is on another level. LJP keeps on raising the bar every single time. So much effort has been rendered into making this unpretentious masterpiece. The director has also delivered some iconic scenes which may possibly go down into the classic collection. The scene with two mothers and their children is such a case in point. Yet again LJP makes direction seem so effortless.

The movie is definitely going down into the classic collection. At least some of the audience would be confused about what must be appreciated more- direction, music, sound design, acting or the script itself.
