JANEMAN (2021)- IS JOYMON THE ONLY LONELY CHARACTER IN THE MOVIE?
Isn’t Joymon and Monichan the same? They are actually people having different versions of the same problem. Both of them are lonely despite having many relatives.
Janeman is a fresh feel good movie released in 2022. Both
the script and direction is handled by debutant director Chidambaram. Considering
he is a debutant director, he has done a very nice job.
There is a scene in the movie where Monichan (Balu Varghese) and
Joymon (Basil Joseph) bonds with each other. The scene is very interesting,
considering the impact of that scene. We can see an extensively talking Joymon
and a silent Monichan in that particular scene. Now, despite Monichan and
Joymon being extremely different characters, the director greatly succeeds in
portraying all the similarities between the characters, using just one scene.
If we go into a deep analysis of that scene, we can see that
just using one sided talking, the scene successfully conveys the emotions of
both characters. The effectiveness of the scene was not formed all of a sudden.
The creator’s effort in establishing the character backgrounds deserves a
special mention. Usually we don’t see so much character depth in a mostly
comedy centric movie. This is where this film stands apart. Wonderful natural
acting in the movie also deserves applause.
Depression is a major theme in the movie. While it is
directly established that Joymon has depression, we find elements of unrevealed
depression in Monichan too. Both Joymon and Monichan lives far away from their
homes. For Joymon it is mainly physical distance, whereas for Monichan, mental
distance is the bigger problem. While a very monotonous and lonely life makes
Joymon depressed, Monichan’s life is filled of emotional hardships. However,
the end result is the same. Despite being depressed, both of them cherish their
good old memories. Almost every individual will find their inner Monichan or
Joymon at some points of their life.
What is your take on this matter?
