MEPPADIYAN IS TRULY THE MODERN "SANDESHAM"
Meppadiyan (2022) is one true village life story seen in a very long time. What happens when innocence of a person conflicts with some totally messed up people and system? The movie is written and directed by debutant Vishnu Mohan. Though the movie starts in a feel good pace, it soons transforms into a socially responsible film. Like the movie Sandhesham (1991) it will also remain forever in Malayali movie discussions since the plot of the movie is somewhat timeless.
Jayakrishnan (Unni Mukundan) is a mechanic who lives a sweet
and simple life. His family includes his mother and sister and his fiancé
Renuka (Anju Kurian). Everything was going well until he meets someone called
Varkey (Saiju Kurup) for some real estate matters. Rest forms the main plot of
the movie.
The impact of power and money over the life of a common man
is well portrayed in the movie. One major character named Thadathil Xavier (Aju
Varghese) who is a corrupt politician is very much relatable to us. In this
film we see the struggles of a common man when the whole system is against him.
This topic is somewhat unexplored in Mollywood.
The natural acting of the main cast and the supporting cast
has to be mentioned. It makes the film a rewatchable one.
In a good number of films, village people is pictured as
naïve and good hearted. Is it always correct? In many places, the “nattu
nadapp” makes it extremely difficult for a normal person to live. The not so
good attitude of the officials in a public office and the corruption filled
system forms another light theme of the movie.
Everything is very realistic in this particular film. How
people make use of us when we are in a bad condition? The film is the answer to
this question.
The film actually shows the true problems of a common man
living in a small state like Kerala. Kerala is always hailed as “God’s own
country”. Is it always so? The job
crisis of the youth, the peculiar greed towards government job, corrupted
politicians controlling the place and many other intentionally unseen problems
are displayed in the movie. Appreciation must be given for that.
How the conditions do
makes a person desperate to react against the system? We see that in the very
unique climax.
